Corporate Social Responsibility is an approach to business which is has a positive effect on the environment, people and company profits.
Innovation is key to success, yet also most challenging. Seeing how other people have turned opportunities into successes, how other people have made use of new technologies, how other people have translated ideas into flourishing enterprises, is what stimulates entrepreneurial behaviour by those people willing to enterprise.
Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is no longer a trend just among large multinational companies operating in developed countries. More and more emerging market companies are seeing the value of committing to responsible business practices. A strong strategy and reputation as a responsible business can help these companies build trust with local stakeholders thereby establishing a local license to operate. Better ways of approaching employee concerns, such as
progressive labor relations, have also been shown to enhance productivity and reduce costs associated with recruitment and turnover. A visible commitment to CSR can help emerging market firms attract multinational partners, access international sources of capital, and reach socially-conscious consumers with their products and services.
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development defines Corporate Social Responsibility as the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large. Often this is translated into the triple P of People Planet Profit, combining social, environmental and economic aspects. CSR is simply about how companies manage the business processes to produce an overall positive impact on society.
Although the practice of CSR has been applied by (some) companies for centuries, the pressure of societies on companies to ensure that economic development brings benefits for the society while caring for the environment brings new challenges and opportunities. Most multinationals now look upon CSR as a profit driver and a condition to ensure continuity of the enterprise that depends on the view of its stakeholders (at large). Smaller enterprises, both in developing and developed countries, find it difficult to translate CSR into concrete practical strategies. Africa Report would like to inform and assist in this.
