Kilimo Trust, an organisation registered with the Republic of Uganda, promotes sustainable agriculture in East Africa has unveiled plans to establish a palm oil production and agroprocessing project in the Kigoma region in Tanzania. The project is expected to benefit small holder farmers of palm oil in Tanzania and the neighbouring country Burundi. The incentive is to encourage local production of soap.
To boost farmers’ earnings, Kilimo Trust plans to mobilise the signing of a marketing contract between farmers and oil processors. The move will also benefit small holder oil processors who currently import palm oil due to low production in the two countries.
This is but one of the efforts taken by Kilimo Trust to help small holder farmers in East Africa to expand their operations and boost earnings. The Kilimo Trust is actively involved in connecting farmers with other stakeholders such as finance institutions, input suppliers, processors and researchers.
Kilimo also provides grants and soft loans to farmers and agro-entrepreneurs. The trust mostly funds innovative projects that promise to increase the income of small holder farmers and profitability of agro-enterprises.
In partnership with the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), the Kilimo Trust guarantees first loans to Stanbic Bank Uganda and Tanzania. This was designed to encourage lending to farmers, agribusinesses and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) involved in agro processing.
