Networking: How To do it Effectively

As an entrepreneur it is common for you to attend meetings where you get to interact with colleagues. Such forums can be useful if you know how to network. Here are a few tips on how to network effectively.

Do Research
Find out more about the event you are attending. Is it a stakeholders meeting or a workshop? Get the details. If possible check the list of expected attendees and see which people you would like to meet.  Doing research will also help you know what the forum is about, what to expect and what to talk about when you get there.

Come Prepared
Before you attend the event remember to carry enough business cards and keep them somewhere they will be easily accessible. Think about the questions you will ask those you meet. Also prepare to tell others about what you do.

Dress Appropriately
It is important to dress in a clean and well pressed decent outfit that portrays you as a tidy and well-mannered professional person. Your presentation will influence your first impression on others.

Talk to Other People
Now that you are at the event, it is time to network. Do not restrict yourself to talking to people you already know. This is a good opportunity to meet new people and tell others about yourself and what you do. Take time to listen to the people you meet and in addition request them to introduce you to people they know.

Keep in Touch
After the event you will probably have dozens of business cards from all the people you met. Evaluate which contacts are important for you, especially those you would like to work with. Send a short ‘it was good to meet you’ message to these contacts and remain in correspondence with the people you met.

Practice Makes Perfect
Though at first you might find it hard to interact with people you have never met before, attending several networking events is one way of improving your communication skills. So look out for more opportunities to network!
