Microsoft Hosts Technology Competition for African Students

University and College students can take part in a technology competition organised by software giant Microsoft and stand to win among other prizes a USD 25,000 cash prize.
Dubbed Imagine Cup 2011, the annual competition sponsored and hosted by Microsoft Corporation is open to students aged 16 to 26 who can pair up in teams of not more than four. There are four main categories to enter namely, digital media, embedded development, game design and software design.
The purpose of the competition is to encourage students to come up with innovative ideas on ways of solving common challenges such as those outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals. It is also expected to foster entrepreneurship among students by enabling them to turn their ideas into business ventures.
Participants will get an opportunity to network with technology experts, innovators and colleagues.
The competition is open to students in Ethiopia, Kenya, Namibia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The winners in the five countries will compete against each other in a  regional competition before proceeding to the global finals.
More then 400 students will   take part in the competition finals which will be held in New York, US on 8th to 13th July.  Some past competitors of the Imagine Cup competition have started their own companies based on their Imagine Cup project.
