The Chairman of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) and former United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Kofi Annan’s four day visit to Tanzania is expected to boost the ongoing Kilimo Kwanza (Green Revolution) campaign.
Apart from anticipated consultations with Government officials and key stakeholders in the agricultural sector including farmers, agro-dealers, civil society and the media, Dr Annan will visit Mbeya region based AGRA projects that are charting a new, sustainable path for agricultural development in Tanzania and across Africa.
A statement released to the press indicated that the ground breaking Kilimo Kwanza initiative has taken the world by storm and the visit comes just at the right time as the country battles to make a breakthrough through sustainable agricultural development.
AGRA, an Africa based organisation working in partnership with governments, agricultural research organisations, farmers, private sector, civil society and other rural development stakeholders is dedicated to significantly and sustainably improve the productivity and incomes of resource poor farmers in Africa.
With offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and Accra Ghana, as well as funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, AGRA’s programs in the areas of seeds, soil health, market viability, supportive policies and innovative finance work to bring about transformational change across the agricultural value chain.
AGRA works to achieve a food secure and prosperous Africa through the promotion of rapid, sustainable agricultural growth based on small-holder farmers. Smallholders, the majority of who are women, produce most of Africa’s food doing so with minimal resources and little government support
The statement read in part:
Dr. Annan is visiting Tanzania for the first time and will have a hands-on experience on the impact of Tanzania’s groundbreaking Kilimo Kwanza initiative. he will also visit AGRRA projects in Mbeya Region. The visit will climax with an address to the media on Monday April 4th.”

AGRA is doing a great job in Africa, but I would like to suggest that they support small farmers with rural technologies just like Global Cycle Solutions is doing in Tanzania in the maize growing areas . Maize is the staple food in most African countries and Global Cycle Solutions has introduced a maize shelling machine that is fixed on a bicyle as an add on. It shells about 10 bags of maize in a day thus making the farmer earn money, create jobs for the rural youth and eases the work load on the mothers in Africa. Guess we can support the iniatives and support them. For reference Ive got a contact of the CEO in Tanzania +255759335543.
