Three students from Uganda’s Makerere University have won the Imagine Cup 2011 East and Central Africa award and will proceed to New York, US for the technology competition finals.
If the finalists win the global competition organised by software giant Microsoft they will get among other awards a USD 25,000 cash prize.
The winning team made up of Joshua Kazzi, Joseph Kazzi and Joseph Lutaato will face off more than 400 students from across the globe during the competition finals to be held from 8th to 13th July 2011. In New York they will get an opportunity to network with technology experts, innovators and colleagues.
The three students emerged the regional winners of the Imagine Cup 2011 after day long pitching where 20 other student teams from universities across the region made presentations.
The trio developed QuestZero, a platform that enables security personnel to enforce the law. According to Joshua Kazzi the crime pattern analysis platform will aid security personnel uphold the rule of law which is key in the achievement of Millennium Development Goals.
The annual Imagine Cup now in its ninth year sponsored and hosted by Microsoft Corporation is open to students aged 16 to 26 who can pair up in teams of not more than four. There were four main categories to enter namely, digital media, embedded development, game design and software design.
The purpose of the competition is to encourage students to come up with innovative ideas on ways of solving common challenges such as those outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals. It is also expected to foster entrepreneurship among students by enabling them to turn their ideas into business ventures.
