Books are like everything else in life: everyone has their own likes, dislikes and opinions. However, there are institutions and experts who know what they are talking about, and when they put out a list of their top industry picks, you’d better take notice. Here are CNBC.com’s top business books…
Multipliers by Liz Wiseman and Greg McKeown
There are two types of bosses: those that are horribly bad and those that are fabulously amazing. As much as you learn from the bad ones about the dos and don’ts of being a boss, you can learn so much more from the better ones. A good boss becomes an inspiration, a guiding light, the kind of boss you want to be one day. In this book, the authors write about how good bosses are vital in creating the future bosses and leaders of tomorrow.
On The Brink by Henry M Paulsen Jr
While most book fans may not recognise his name, the author’s work will resonate with anyone who has been affected by the global recession. Henry Paulsen Jr is the former Treasury Secretary of the United States, and the full title of his book is, On the Brink: Inside The Race To Stop The Collapse Of The Global Financial System. So guess what he has written about? Everything that went on with the economic collapse of the United States, Wall Street and AIG, a multi-billion dollar company that just about ruined the world’s markets.
Delivering Happiness by Tony Hsieh
Author Tony Hsieh knows all about delivering happiness. His online shoe company, Zappos.com, is currently the biggest of its type in the world and it was bought by Amazon.com for a whopping $1.2 billion in stock. In this book, he chronicles how he made his customers his priority – a move that made him not only wealthy, but extremely successful at the same time.
The Upside Of Irrationality by Dan Ariely
Business is all about decision making. Sometimes the decisions you make are logical, other times they are completely against the grain. In this book, author Dan Ariely outlines how and why we make decisions that are often considered irrational, as well as providing exercises, experiments and other tests for readers to play around with to better understand the personal decision making process.
Adventures Among Ants by Mark W Moffett
When it comes to organisation and structure, nothing can compete with that of an ant colony. Despite the fact that there are millions of individual ants in one place, each and every one of them is designated to a specific group and department and knows what it’s meant to do. In a catchy, enjoyable way, the book helps us to understand how an ant colony works, allowing the reader to implement structure and order at the workplace. If the book’s simple principles are followed, employees and the company as a whole will undoubtedly perform better.
Some of these books might strike a chord with you, some might not. The important thing is to keep reading and opening your mind to new ideas and concepts. In the cutthroat world of business, a simple idea, even a radically and different one, and maybe give you the edge over your competitors. And from there – success is inevitable. Reading, then, can only be considered a good thing.
