Being a leader is hard work as it is. Being a good leader is even harder work. So what does it take to become a good leader in the business place?

Some leaders are born, some are taught… The best leaders, though, are a combination of natural instinct and learned knowledge. It’s vital for any company, organisation or department to have a good leader heading up the team. But what do you look for in a leader?
#001. One of the most important aspects of a good leader is actually being good at a specific industry. There is no point in hiring someone to do a job that they aren’t exceptionally good at. Would Ferrari hire an aerodynamic engineer if he had just scraped through university or his latest work looks like a child put it together? Of course not. Companies will look to hire people with proven track records who they believe are capable of reaching their objectives. By doing this, the team will already be inspired in the fact that they have someone to turn to who knows what they are doing.
#002. Leaders need to inspire, be charismatic and stand out from the crowd. This sets them worlds apart from dull and drab personalities who may come across bored or uninterested with the task at hand. Employees will respond better to their projects and tasks if their leader is excited about it and wills them on to perform better. A good leader will also show passion for their job, a love that they have developed over the years. This shows the team that their leader is serious about their tasks and will prompt them to be as well.
#003. Another vital trait necessary for a good leader is instinct. We’re not just talking about taking a leap of faith in using a radical concept or design or the industry trends, but also when it comes to their team. A leader needs to know when something is going on in their team without actually being told. By being able to “sense” or “feel” an imminent change or occurrence, a leader can intercept and deal with the issue. If an employee is going to struggle with Step 3 of a task, a good leader will step in at Step 2 and assist. This will also put faith in their team because it will show humanistic understanding as well as complete knowledge of the industry.
#004. Leaders also need to be able to adapt, react and keep control. The business world is an ever-changing environment, and a good leader must be able to change the gameplan at any stage to compensate for unforeseen changes. They must also know what they’re doing so that they can convey the information over to their team. If a leader loses control of one team member, there will be instant panic because the boss, who the team is meant to trust, is no longer in control. The leader must also be able to communicate effectively to ensure that everyone in the team understands what is and isn’t expected of him or her. This makes their tasks easier to complete, as well as easier for the leader to make decisions regarding any situations that may arise.Leaders lead. They take control of the situation or task at hand, and they take their team forward to achieve their goals. There is no place at the front for those who cannot inspire their teams to greatness and make sure that they get there.
