Unless you’re a hoarder, clutter is a problem. And it makes achieving your work goals so much harder. It’s important that as an employee, you know what you are trying to achieve if you want any chance of becoming a long term, sustainable success.
There are a number of ways to go about simplifying work and making your objectives clear cut. There are mind maps to play with, briefs to write, and having clients tell you exactly what they need, drawing graphs and having it in your mind exactly what you need to achieve. While you have to rely on other people for some of these, other things, like mind maps and graphs, can be done by you.
It’s important that you know where you’re starting from and where you need to go. This will allow you to go about putting the rest of the pieces of the puzzle together. If you know step 1 (where you begin) and, say, step 10 (where you finish), you can visualise and write down the rest of the steps that need to be done. This will also assist you in sourcing new materials and stockists, or even outsourcing to another enterprise if needs be. You can also then draw up budgets and other financial and production documents that will be used to assess the viability of the project and ensure that all the steps are done.
You will also be able to keep strict control over the process as you will know what should be done at what stage – if you are behind schedule, you can chase up the problem areas as well as find a remedy. This could save you a lot of time and money on this project, as well as others in the future. By having clear goals and objectives, you will also be able to check your own progress as personal motivation – you will beat yourself up if you find that you’ve fallen behind schedule.
By removing any obstructions and distractions, you will make life easier for yourself and the rest of the team. You will have a timeline and know what should be done by when, and instead of sitting around all day wasting precious time, you’ll be able to keep track of the project’s progress. This will also give you the benefit of being able to answer your boss at any stage when they ask what the status of the particular project is. The last thing you want to do is say, “Um, ah, I don’t really know…”
Having clear goals is vital for any project. Knowing what you need to do, how you’re going to do it, and what all it will entail makes everyone’s job easier and that much simpler to achieve. So get rid of that clutter and make getting your job done that much simpler.
