Dedicated Entrepreneur Runs Growing Maternity Clinic

Dedicated entrepreneur Sarah Mwanje used her experience and skills to provide much needed services of a private maternity clinic in her rural community in Kampala, Uganda.
Starting off with only two rooms, Sarah’s clinic has been established for 20 years and has expanded to new premises with 4 rooms and 5 staff members that attend to on average 40 patients a day. The clinic is a 24 hour maternity clinic that performs check-ups, deliveries and minor surgeries.
Sarah saw a gap in her community for these services after working for 13 years in a governmental hospital as a nurse. She saw that many urban people in her Ugandan community could not access medical services properly, had to travel long distances to reach governmental hospitals and then wait in long queues unattended for long periods of time. Seeing this need she saw the opportunity to start her own clinic.
Governmental maternity clinics in Uganda are in a bad state and lack sufficient facilities like beds, medicine and surgical materials. This means that many women have lost their lives while giving birth. Many women choose to give birth without a trained professional, as there is a shortage of midwives in the country.
Micro finance is helping different businesses in Uganda to access finance. Sarah gained help through MYC4 which secured Sarah a loan to start her company.
