Kenyan entrepreneur injects groove into local music market

Spotting a gap in the market, Kanjii Mbugua went from music distribution to studio recording local artists. This is the story of how he turned his network and skills into a successful business.
Kanjii Mbugua is a beat-busting entrepreneur. This young musician found his business groove in the culture of creative Kenyans.
He started a music production company that records local artists and manages entertainment events. Starting in 2003, Kanjii began work in music distribution, but after spotting a gap in the market, he slowly moved towards creating and recording original content.
Kanjii identified potential business opportunities for local artists in music and entertainment events aimed at the growing middle-class Kenyan market.  He subsequently set up Kijiji records Limited, a creative communication agency in Nairobi.
Starting small on an old borrowed computer, Kanjii slowly grew the company to financial maturity.
Over the past few years, Kijiji has grown from strength to strength as the business took off. One of his main focuses as an entrepreneur is making sure to market the company on public platforms. Their marketing strategy makes use of social networks (Twitter, Facebook and MySpace) as a free marketing tools to promote their business.
For Kanjii, entrepreneurship is about going trying new things and chasing exciting opportunities. Although there is a risk involved in ‘putting yourself out there’, with a little self-belief and a fearless spirit Kanjii believes anyone can turn a simple concept into great business.
As a musician himself, he believes in following the beat of your own drum and discovering where it will lead you. For Kanjii, he followed his own tune and started a creative communication company in the music and entertainment industry. Where will your beat take you?
